Africa Utopia: Digital Africa The Future Is Now - 12-14.09.14

Video pieces and sonic experiments by established and emerging artists working in Africa and the diaspora.

Developed as part of Africa Utopia 2014, this project draws from the notion of utopia as a concept allowing the reinvention of an African experience, memory, and narrative. This happens within the context of the continent and beyond and is seen both from an individual and collective perspective.

The exhibition also aims to ground new media arts as a contemporary practice in Africa, and places artistic innovations from the continent in the immediate present.

The artists featured include: Larry Achiampong (UK/Ghana), Nirveda Alleck (Mauritius); Younes Baba-Ali (Morocco/Belgium); Isoje Chou (Nigeria/Canada); Em’Kal Eyongakpa (Cameroon); Cecilia Ferreira (South Africa); Chido Johnson (Zimbabwe/US); Laura Nsengiyumva (Belgium/Rwanda), and more.

Digital Africa is also dedicated to the memory of prize-winning Malian video artist Bakary Diallo (1979 – 2014) a former student of the renowned Conservatory of Arts and Multimedia (Bamako, Mali), and Le Fresnoy National Studio of Contemporary Arts (Tourcoing, France) who passed away in the Air Algerie tragedy on July 27.

A leading figure in the Malian and African art scene, Diallo developed a unique cinematographic genre blending fiction and documentary, often addressing socio-political issues in a symbolical visual language.

This display is conceived by Christine Eyene, curator and Guild Research Fellow in Contemporary Art, University of Central Lancashire.
