There has been a noted increase in the numbers of people of African origin being trafficked into different European countries to be exploited and abused in different ways. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) estimated that over 11,000 victims were trafficked into Italy via Libya in 2017. In the UK, the National Crime Agency identified over 10 African countries as sources of modern slavery in the country. All over Europe, the issue of human trafficking from Africa has become a major problem with dire consequences for victims.
Despite the above, there is very little involvement or efforts by the African diaspora to help tackle this growing challenge. This means a near absence of diaspora effort to tackle demand in Europe as well as to tackle supply in source countries. The lack of effort by Africans themselves to help address the problem of human trafficking could be a key factor in its continued growth.
