Known as Meklit, she was born in Ethiopia, raised in the US, and is based in San Francisco. Her warm singing voice and lyrical songwriting move seamlessly from the starkly personal to the poetical.
A Senior TED Fellow and a deeply committed social and cultural activist, she has created a collective of young artists of the Ethiopian diaspora.
In 2011 she launched the UN Women's campaign for gender equality in Africa, and co-founded the Nile Project.
Producer Eli Crews (tUnE-yArDs, Deerhoof, Geographer) helped guide We Are Alive's spirit of innovation and sonic dexterity. The album also features author Walter Mosley and Ethiopian piano sensation Samuel Yirga.
'Meklit delivers a sound all her own…[We Are Alive] gets even better with each listen' (USA Today)
