Born in Nigeria, Nneka Lucia Egbuna emigrated to Hamburg at the age of 19 to pursue a music career as stylistically diverse as her background. Singing in both Igbo and English, the neo-soul singer cites Fela Kuti, Mos Def and Lauryn Hill as key influences for her own music, which reflect her time spent in Nigeria and Western Europe, loading her lyrics with examinations of capitalism, poverty and moral references.
Having now worked with everyone from Chase & Status to Ziggy Marley and most recently appearing on Tricky's 2013 album False Idols, Nneka's April show at Village Underground isn't one to miss.
