The Holy Biscuit is pleased to present an exhibition by Fetlework Tesfaye as part of Refugee Week 2014. Tefaye is an Ethiopian ceramicist and painter trained in Ethiopia, Kenya and Japan, whose work explores her experience as a refugee living in the UK. Presenting her personal reflections on displacement, community and hope, the exhibition will also include the work of local school children, made during workshops with the artist and will celebrate diversity and an attitude of welcome in our community.
In the week leading up to the exhibition The Holy Biscuit will run workshops with local primary schools, St Catherine’s Roman Catholic Primary and Christ Church Church of England School. The aim is to engage the children with the artist and her work, but also to encourage concepts of welcome, safety and inclusion. These workshops will provide them with a unique and memorable experience, working with a talented professional artist. At our Launch Event visitors will have the opportunity to meet the artist, and enjoy live music and light refreshments in the gallery space. The exhibition will be open throughout Refugee Week, and there will be another opportunity to further discuss the work and themes raised at a discussion event. Using the artist’s sculptural piece ‘Escape’ for the theme of the discussion, we will invite guests to offer different perspectives on the work, interspersed with poetry reading, an interview with the artist and the serving of Ethiopian coffee.
Exhibition Launch event: Sunday 15 June, 15:00 – 18:00
Exhibition: 16 - 21 June, Gallery Open 11:00 – 16.00
Discussion Evening: Thursday 19 June: 19:00 - 21:00
