This year’s August in Africa Summer Festival will explore cultural identity through African contemporary photography. Expect a day rich with workshop activities, inspiring fashion shows, cutting-edge music and exquisite food.

The fashion show will showcase the most talented designers from the continent and its diaspora. The show aims to be inspiring, motivational and entertaining whilst bringing awareness about diversity and talents within the fashion industry.
The Story Within is a celebration of portrait photography in Africa since the 1960s.
Africa is home to some of the world’s most talented photographers whose style has developed from documenting the streets and popular culture into a diverse contemporary practice.
The digital exhibition will depict African portraiture and the great diversity of this tradition. A series of curated images will morph into an animated display, inviting the viewer to dive into a 3-dimensional space while being immersed in an exploratory cultural and historical journey. Aesthetics and styles will be featured from photographers such as award-winning Malick Sidibé, and rising-stars Mario Macilau, Aida Muluneh, Joana Choumali and Omar Victor Diop.
Lomography will be running a special LC-A+ workshop starting at their Soho Store. You will learn tips and tricks of shooting with this compact automatic 35mm camera, showing you how to take fun portraits and double exposures too. The team will then take participants to Covent Garden to test out your newfound knowledge.
The workshop will start at 1pm and is FREE but places are limited so booking is advised, book by ringing 02074341466. (Includles the loan of camera and one roll of film. There will be a small charge for film processing at the end of the workshop.
Moroccan photographer and renowned artist Hassan Hajjaj will honour the tradition of the photography studio by capturing striking styles among visitors. Recreating his famous décor influenced by club, hip-hop and reggae scenes of London, Hassan will shoot the most stylish Festival goers. The photographs will be showcased as part of an online campaign.
