On Saturday 29th May, Focus present yet another cracking line-up for The Best from Africa series. Hosted at PASSING CLOUDS. Zimbabwe meets Congo for a night of pure afro grooving. HARARE (Chimurenga) and KASAI MASAI (Soukous) will be performing live with their latest releases.
HARARE (Zimbabwe)
Harare are one of the few groups to be playing Zimbabwean dance music in Europe. Frontman and marimba virtuoso Kuda Matimba was a member of the legendary Bhundu Boys, the band that did more than any to bring African music into the western mainstream back in the 80s. You may be forgiven for thinking there’s not much to sing and dance about in today’s Zimbabwe, but Matimba is here keeping the faith, with a repertoire of new material mixed in with a few glances back over his musical shoulders. He confronts his homelands' woes and looks to the future while celebrating the musical alliances he has made in the UK through the prism of Zimbabwe’s urban Chimurenga and Jit Jive music.

Kasai Masai are seasoned performers. After appearances at WOMAD, Sarawak Rainforest Festival Malaysia and El Poble Espanyol Barcelona, their energetic and upbeat live sets are so uplifting you'll be cheering for more all night. If you've seen these Soukous Kings before then you'll be fully aware of their dance-inducing Congolese beats. If not, it's about time you took a plunge in their music pool.
